Masterclass 1 - VT Guarantee - 02/10/2018

Masterclass 1 was the first in the series of 4 masterclasses scheduled for this module.
This instalment was on VT guarantee taught by Ollie, a Cloudbass Engineer. He gave an overview of what is required and what can be achieved in Cloudbass BOB1 OB truck.

The ability to appropriately read and follow the instructions contained in the call sheet is a vital skill every VT guarantee most have.

The session started for with a brief look at the call sheet from the Scottish Professional football league game, a 13 camera and 4 XT3 job that Cloubass usually handles.

One advantage of the XT3 machine is that it has eight (8) channels and can handle any combination of inputs and outputs.  For example, on the call sheet for this job, see Figure 1, EVS 4 was configured to handle one (1) super slo-mo, three (3) standard inputs and two (2) outputs, while EVS 1 was set to handle four (4) inputs and outputs. The Call sheet also details the number of operators per EVS.

When setting up the EVS, it is imperative that it is positioned in the right place for the right operator; otherwise, the VT guarantee runs the risk of pulling out machines after setup.

All inputs should be connected to the panel except for the special cases, i.e. super slo-mo.

The VT guarantee is responsible for ensuring that all operators can
  • See what they need to see
  • Hear what they need to hear
  • Route what they need to route

Finally, In a facility with multiple EVS, the VT guarantee is responsible for setting up of a media management system, i.e. X-file, which is handed over to the media management coordinator afterwards.

A VT guarantee is allowed to ask questions at all times especially when some things are not clear.

After the brief look at a call sheet, Ollie took us on a tour to see BOB1, where he showed us how to route, configure and network EVS systems.
